The Song Men are a trio of friends who, after years of travelling their own musical journeys, have come together to create a blend of original, country- soul sounds.

Nick is a professional guitarist and seasoned musician whose dynamic and emotionally charged guitar playing and vocals captivate the stage.

Joel’s creativity and mastery of the cello adds a beautiful and yet complex colour and mood to the music.

Annabel is a vocalist and song writer whose complimentary and sometimes unexpected harmonies summarise the emotions within the band songs.

As a trio of musicians, The Song Men are a band that can be enjoyed both intimately and atmospherically in any space.

The Jaybirds are living proof that music is a universal language. Its band members hail from Asia, Europe, North America but make their music here in Australia. They perform a mix of covers from Fleetwood Mac to Ed Sheeran with a few originals thrown in for good measure. At Beyond Q they will play a mix of easy-going songs, perfect for planning that next adventure over a good cup of coffee.

<contact>Art Underground; https://www.facebook.com/artundergroundopenmic/?fref=ts</contact>

Art Underground is in hibernation at the moment as we move premises.
In its first year Art Underground was graciously created by the uber-creative and ever-dedicated team, Lauren, Aarin and Jacqui. At the end of that first incarnation it was reinvented (but followed much the same format) by Andrew Richey and Alice Lafferty. They too, continued to create and enlarge on the original concept.
The last few months Art Underground has been gently stirring, stretching and is now shining on a brand new day. This time Art Underground is hosted by Rachael Carson and her perennial side kick, Alf.
they are primed, highly caffeinated (or red wined) and ready to rumble! This new venture will bring new faces and adventures. And of course we will have new artists!
So come and join us for the same old shenanigans at Beyond Q. We’ll continue to have great food, drink, ambience and merriment. We will continue to welcome performers with wide open arms to embrace the open mic with their creative rumblings. We will also continue to showcase some of the best up and coming artists in the ACT.
Don’t forget though, Beyond Q will soon be moving to new premises in Weston Creek. We will keep you posted

Introducing the Merlotones…
Kate Halcrow – Vocalist,
Claude Dietrich – Guitar,
Peter Rogers – Bass and
Garry Owen/John Coleman – Percussion.
All from Canberra but with a mix of French-Bulgarian- Australian heritage, we are a local jazz band offering unique interpretations of Smooth Jazz Classics. Melodies from the Ella Fitgerald, Peggy Lee, Nina Simone and Etta James songbooks are definite favourites, but our repertoire also includes some surprising contemporary tunes given a jazz-blues twist.
Our sounds are sweet, nuanced, cool and captivating.

The Accents are living proof that music is a universal language.

40 years playing!
Daniel Lids Fernandes has been playing and writing music for over 40 years; In Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney. Dan played throughout the mid-70s to 1987 when he stopped for personal reasons.
He returned to playing live in 2005. An engaging and communicative performer who over the last few years has been playing solo and sometimes additional musician friends also sit in. The music is mostly original; covering a broad range of genres.
Dan describes his music as a blend of acoustic Soul, reggae, folk and blues. Dan compliments his original compositions with selected interpretations of songs from other artists such as Bob Dylan, Beatles, Rolling Stones and Lucinda Williams. Dan has a natural vocal style which is delightfully suited to the music he writes.

Daniel McFeeley is the creator of witty, thoughtful, unpredictable music. (Often all three at once) From hard driving foot stomping rhythms to intricate lilting melodies. A man of many talents Daniel has written and/or illustrated 11 children’s books (a few NY times best sellers). As an actor he’s appeared on screen with the likes of Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thorton, and Charlie Sheen. Musically Dan’s shared a stage with Pete Seeger, Harry Chapin, and the Chieftains. (not at the same time)

A little blues, a little ragtime, a little Irish. He’s Weird Al Yankovic, meets Ed Sheeran… with a little Tom Waits sprinkled on top!

http://27.124.115.1/~beyondqc/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Night-Potion-Promo.mp3
Night Potion are Caroline McNicholas (singer songwriter/flute), Johnny Reynolds (guitar), Paul Callan (bass) and Shayne Rolt (drums/percussion). Their set is eclectic ranging from Traditional Irish tunes infused with jazz, blues and rock idiom to original songs penned by Caroline and Johnny. They have recently recorded a CD, ‘The Armada Sessions’. The album contains exciting rock arrangements of traditional Irish tunes as well as haunting original songs with a distinctive celtic flavour.
Caroline McNicholas is a singer songwriter from Dublin and has played flute from a young age. She has an MA in music from St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, where she specialised in composition and musicology. She has toured extensively with Urban trad band ‘Suas’ before collaborating with partner Johnny Reynolds as Night Potion.
Johnny Reynolds has been a professional guitarist for the past 30 years. He played on the Dublin circuit since 1982 with bands such as The Touch and No Shame. While involved with the latter group Johnny had the honour of supporting BB King at the National Stadium in Dublin 1985. After a short stint touring Ireland with The Karen Coleman Band, he joined The Rob Strong Band for 5 years touring Europe and Ireland. While in Europe they shared The Gothenberg Rock Festival bill with such giants as Deep Purple, Georgie Fame, The Kinks and Zak Wilde. Johnny went on to join acclaimed Dublin outfit ‘The International Blues Band’. They toured in the UK, Canada and Ireland where they supported James Brown at the Point Depot in Dublin. In 1997 he formed The Johnny Reynolds Band playing mainly original material from the blues/rock genre. He has recorded 4 Cds to date, Never Say Die (1998), Summer’s Here (2001), Rock Steady Blues (2002), Johnny Reynolds Band Live in JJ Smyths(2007).

We all like to laugh.
I believe in the entertainment factor of music. Most songs these days are about heartbreak and loss – songs that make you want to cry. I want to make you laugh, dance and sing along, after all life should be fun. I am not discounting serious songs as I have written them also (have a listen to Losing You). My songs are mainly ballads about life.
I bought my first guitar at 17 but was turned off by the teaching methods of the day – you know – here’s a scale, learn it. I just wanted to play songs. I dabbled over the years, more off than on. In 2002 my partner suggested we start a music club of our own after traveling to Folk Victoria on a Friday night to listen to live music, which we loved. From this the Berwick and District Folk Club (Badfolk) was born. This club provided the inspiration to get deeper into music developing song writing skills through work shops and performing.
I took singing lessons to enhance my vocal ability. To those who helped me on the way – you know who you are, thank you.
This journey has resulted in the release of my debut CD, ‘Memories and Other Tales’ in 2012.
This has been followed by my second CD, ‘Doing Nothing’, 2014. My third, Facebook Friends, will be released in 2017.
I like most types of music. Favourite artists include blues players like Tony Joe White, and BB King. I like country music like Johnny Cash and others.
Rock is also a favourite. Players like Johnny Rivers, Dion, Bob Seeger, Eagles and even a bit of heavy metal like Led Zeppelin.
Who could not like Bob Dylan songs? From this you can see my main love is for music from the 50’s to the 70’s.
I love the sharing and community aspect of music.

Chris Johnson has been performing at Beyond Q longer than any other of our regular artists. In 2017 Chris joined forces with Artem Grigoriev to form Capo Creek, a guitar duo with force. Artem adds sophisticated guitar licks to Chris’s beautiful voice and energetic guitar style. The duo have been pleasing the Beyond Q crowd with every appearance. They add their own personal touch to classic rock ballads and blues, as well as offering some very classy original numbers of their own. Playing great songs from the catalogues of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Townes Van Zandt, The Beatles, the Stones, Johnny Cash and many more, they are always entertaining and a pleasure to listen to over a coffee or two. Capo Creek – where the water is sweet and the music even sweeter – seriously no paddles required.

Beyond Q is hosting Michael Lemmer.
So who is Michael Lemmer?
Michael is a quiet, almost shy retiring kind of guy until he picks up his slide guitar and lets his music speak.
And then,
Well then – jaws drop as the quiet guy channels Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page – who all flirted with slide.
If you listen hard you will even hear a little touch of George Harrison – one of the world’s most influential guitarists who started playing slide in 1969 – albeit in a non blues style.
Michael will mesmerize you with his dexterity and intensity. It’s no wonder he has supported artists such as John King Cleary, Stephen Cummings, Phil Emmanuel, Mick Thomas and the Sure Thing.
Even the hardest to excite, jaded music reporters like The SMH’s Chris Johnson, have said “a guitarist whose prowess on the steel-bodied National tri-cone resonator is impressive . . . . a sound that can only be created with an excellent understanding of how sweetly a resonator guitar can sing”.
You haven’t heard of him? Fix that while you can!

The Uke café is a sing-along (strum-along) collection of folky, doo-wop, country, bluesy, jazz standards. (there’s a style for everybody)
• All songs (words & chords) are projected on a 2 metre screen so no music books are needed.
• Loaner ukes are available… along with loaner uke players to give you a pointer here or there… if you’d like a pointer here or there. So even if you’ve never played before …here’s your chance. (No strings attached… no pun intended)
PLUS There’s a full band, so all of those “beginner klinkers” (that we ALL occasionally hit) are beautifully blended right into that big beautiful sound of all of us playing together.
PS…Words, chords and even links to song videos can be emailed to anyone who might like a little up front practice before we all get together.
Also you can visit our facebook page… https://www.facebook.com/theukecafe/?view_public_for=1640152272677653

Fred started playing the 12-string acoustic guitar in Sydney in the late 1960s, inspired and mentored by the likes of Doug Ashdown, Mike McLellan, Marion Henderson, Buddy Wilson and Phil Cuneen. He was a regular at PACT Folk, Sydney’s premier folk club that saw impromptu appearances by Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul and Mary.
He played with Pat Drummond’s Toot Whistle Plunk and Boom Band, regulars in the Sydney music scene, headlining at many of the university and protest movement concerts in aid of the anti- Viet Nam war movement. Pat’s website retrospectively refers to Fred as a “12-string guitar whiz kid”. Iva Davies (Icehouse) cites the band as a major influence.
After moving to Canberra in the mid-1970s Fred played with a wide range of Canberra’s musical luminaries and iconic musicians including Mike Hayes (the Pricklefarmer), Donal Baylor, Dave O’Neill, Bruce Packard, John Butler (the Canadian one), Kevin Abbey, Lainey Kier and Steve McDonald, John van Buuren, Rick Hay, and appeared on Eric Bogle’s CD, Endangered Species. He appeared on a variety of ads and soundtracks and have been a regular for many years, with a variety of bands and performers, at the National Folk Festival.
His recent and current projects include Craig Dawson’s extraordinary Lord Byron Five; a double-
CD work-in-progress with Pat, Geoff and Steve Drummond; a CD commemorating Gordon Lightfoot’s 75th birthday with Gary Luck; and a new blues band, The Northside Lemon Kickers. As a member of Celtic band, Humbug, he recorded and produced their recent CD, On Raglan Road.
As a solo performer his material ranges from traditional to contemporary.
Today at Beyond Q Fred is joined by the very talented George Breu on bass.
