Art Underground
is in hibernation at the moment as we move premises.

p>In its first year Art Underground was graciously created by the uber-cre
ative and ever-dedicated team\, Lauren\, Aarin and Jacqui. At the end of t
hat first incarnation it was reinvented (but followed much the same format
) by Andrew Richey and Alice Lafferty. They too\, continued to create and
enlarge on the original concept.\n
The last few months Art Undergro
und has been gently stirring\, stretching and is now shining on a brand ne
w day. This time Art Underground is hosted by Rachael Carson and her pere
nnial side kick\, Alf.
\n
they are primed\, highly caffeinated (or re
d wined) and ready to rumble! This new venture will bring new faces and ad
ventures. And of course we will have new artists!
\n
So come and join
us for the same old shenanigans at Beyond Q. We’ll continue to have great
food\, drink\, ambience and merriment. We will continue to welcome perfor
mers with wide open arms to embrace the open mic with their creative rumbl
ings. We will also continue to showcase some of the best up and coming art
ists in the ACT.

All from Canberra but with a mix of French-Bulgarian- Australian herita
ge\, we are a local jazz band offering unique interpretations of Smooth Ja
zz Classics. Melodies from the Ella Fitgerald\, Peggy Lee\, Nina Simone an
d Etta James songbooks are definite favourites\, but our repertoire also i
ncludes some surprising contemporary tunes given a jazz-blues twist.

Our sounds are sweet\, nuanced\, cool and captivating.
Frank Zappia is a local piano pla
yer\, composer and singer who has discovered his love of playing music liv
e\, for actual people! He showcases his gentle unique style\, melodically
and dynamically through his instrumental piano compositions\, pop covers a
nd original songs.
Wattas A little bit doowop
\, a little bit modern\, but really all over the shop with a little classi
c Aussie pop on top. Wattas grew out o
f the Ukulele Republic of Canberra and features\, yes\, ukulele\, backed u
p by banjo\, occasional double bass and percussion. <
span class=''>Watts have played at local events\, ukulele festivals in the
Blue Mountains and Newcastle and performed on stage at the National Folk
Festival in 2016.
The Accents are liv

Daniel Lids Fernandes has b
een playing and writing music for over 40 years\; In Canberra\, Melbourne
and Sydney. Dan played throughout the mid-70s to 1987 when he stopped for
personal reasons.
\n
He returned to playing live in 2005. An engagin
g and communicative performer who over the last few years has been playing
solo and sometimes additional musician friends also sit in. The music is
mostly original\; covering a broad range of genres.
\n
Dan describes
his music as a blend of acoustic Soul\, reggae\, folk and blues. Dan comp
liments his original compositions with selected interpretations of songs f
rom other artists such as Bob Dylan\, Beatles\, Rolling Stones and Lucinda
Williams. Dan has a natural vocal style which is delightfully suited to t
he music he writes.
Daniel McFeeley is the cre
ator of witty\, thoughtful\, unpredictable music. (Often all three at once
) From hard driving foot stomping rhythms to intricate lilting melodies. A
man of many talents Daniel has written and/or illustrated 11 child
ren’s books (a few NY times best sellers). As an actor he’s appeared on sc
reen with the likes of Bruce Willis\, Billy Bob Thorton\, and Charlie Shee
n. Musically Dan’s shared a stage with Pete Seeger\, Harry Chapin\, and th
e Chieftains. (not at the same time)

es\, a little ragtime\, a little Irish. He’s Weird Al Yankovic\, meets Ed

Night Potion are Caroline McNicholas (s
inger songwriter/flute)\, Johnny Reynolds (guitar)\, Paul Callan (bass) an
d Shayne Rolt (drums/percussion). Their set is eclectic ranging from Tradi
tional Irish tunes infused with jazz\, blues and rock idiom to original so
ngs penned by Caroline and Johnny. They have recently recorded a CD\, ‘The
Armada Sessions’. The album contains exciting rock arrangements of tradit
ional Irish tunes as well as haunting original songs with a distinctive ce
ltic flavour.
\n
Caroline McNicholas is a singer songwriter from Dubl
in and has played flute from a young age. She has an MA in music from St P
atrick’s College\, Drumcondra\, where she specialised in composition and m
usicology. She has toured extensively with Urban trad band ‘Suas’ before c
ollaborating with partner Johnny Reynolds as Night Potion.
\n
Johnny
Reynolds has been a professional guitarist for the past 30 years. He playe
d on the Dublin circuit since 1982 with bands such as The Touch and No Sha
me. While involved with the latter group Johnny had the honour of supporti
ng BB King at the National Stadium in Dublin 1985. After a short stint tou
ring Ireland with The Karen Coleman Band\, he joined The Rob Strong Band f
or 5 years touring Europe and Ireland. While in Europe they shared The Got
henberg Rock Festival bill with such giants as Deep Purple\, Georgie Fame\
, The Kinks and Zak Wilde. Johnny went on to join acclaimed Dublin outfit
‘The International Blues Band’. They toured in the UK\, Canada and Ireland
where they supported James Brown at the Point Depot in Dublin. In 1997 he
formed The Johnny Reynolds Band playing mainly original material from the
blues/rock genre. He has recorded 4 Cds to date\, Never Say Die (1998)\,
Summer’s Here (2001)\, Rock Steady Blues (2002)\, Johnny Reynolds Band Liv
e in JJ Smyths(2007).

David has been playing Piano professionally for many years a
nd is warmly welcomed back by Simon and his team of great Baristas
We all like to
laugh. \nI believe in the entertainment factor of music. Most songs
these days are about heartbreak and loss – songs that make you want to cry
. I want to make you laugh\, dance and sing along\, after all life should
be fun. I am not discounting serious songs as I have written them also (ha
ve a listen to Losing You). My songs are mainly ballads about life.
\n<
p>I bought my first guitar at 17 but was turned off by the teaching method
s of the day – you know – here’s a scale\, learn it. I just wanted to play
songs. I dabbled over the years\, more off than on. In 2002 my partner su
ggested we start a music club of our own after traveling to Folk Victoria
on a Friday night to listen to live music\, which we loved. From this the
Berwick and District Folk Club (Badfolk) was born. This club provided the
inspiration to get deeper into music developing song writing skills throug
h work shops and performing.\n
I took singing lessons to enhance my
vocal ability. To those who helped me on the way – you know who you are\,
thank you. \nThis journey has resulted in the release of my debut CD
\, ‘Memories and Other Tales’ in 2012. \nThis has been followed by my
second CD\, ‘Doing Nothing’\, 2014. My third\, Facebook Friends\, will be
released in 2017. \nI like most types of music. Favourite artists in
clude blues players like Tony Joe White\, and BB King. I like country musi
c like Johnny Cash and others. \nRock is also a favourite. Players li
ke Johnny Rivers\, Dion\, Bob Seeger\, Eagles and even a bit of heavy meta
l like Led Zeppelin. \nWho could not like Bob Dylan songs? From this
you can see my main love is for music from the 50’s to the 70’s. \nI
love the sharing and community aspect of music.
Chris Johnson has been performing
at Beyond Q longer than any other of our regular artists. In 2017 Chris jo
ined forces with Artem Grigoriev to form Capo Creek\, a guitar duo with fo
rce. Artem adds sophisticated guitar licks to Chris’s beautiful voice and
energetic guitar style. The duo have been pleasing the Beyond Q crowd with
every appearance. They add their own personal touch to classic rock balla
ds and blues\, as well as offering some very classy original numbers of th
eir own. Playing great songs from the catalogues of Bob Dylan\, Neil Young
\, Townes Van Zandt\, The Beatles\, the Stones\, Johnny Cash and many more
\, they are always entertaining and a pleasure to listen to over a coffee
or two. Capo Creek – where the water is sweet and the music even sweeter –
seriously no paddles required.

Michael is a quiet\, a
lmost shy retiring kind of guy until he picks up his slide guitar and lets
his music speak.

Well then – jaws drop as the
quiet guy channels Eric Clapton\, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page – who all flirt
ed with slide.
\n
If you listen hard you will even hear a little touc
h of George Harrison – one of the world’s most influential guitarists who
started playing slide in 1969 – albeit in a non blues style.
\n
Micha
el will mesmerize you with his dexterity and intensity. It’s no wonder he
has supported artists such as John King Cleary\, Stephen Cummings\, Phil E
mmanuel\, Mick Thomas and the Sure Thing.
\n
Even the hardest to exci
te\, jaded music reporters like The SMH’s Chris Johnson\, have said “a gui
tarist whose prowess on the steel-bodied National tri-cone resonator is im
pressive . . . . a sound that can only be created with an excellent unders
tanding of how sweetly a resonator guitar can sing”.
The Uke café is a sing-along (strum-along) collectio
n of folky\, doo-wop\, country\, bluesy\, jazz standards. (there’s a style
for everybody)

Fred started playing the 12-stri
ng acoustic guitar in Sydney in the late 1960s\, inspired and mentored by
the likes of Doug Ashdown\, Mike McLellan\, Marion Henderson\, Buddy Wilso
n and Phil Cuneen. He was a regular at PACT Folk\, Sydney’s premier folk c
lub that saw impromptu appearances by Bob Dylan and Peter\, Paul and Mary.
\n
He played with Pat Drummond’s Toot Whistle Plunk and Boom Band\,
regulars in the Sydney music scene\, headlining at many of the university
and protest movement concerts in aid of the anti- Viet Nam war movement. P
at’s website retrospectively refers to Fred as a “12-string guitar whiz ki
d”. Iva Davies (Icehouse) cites the band as a major influence.
\n
Aft
er moving to Canberra in the mid-1970s Fred played with a wide range of Ca
nberra’s musical luminaries and iconic musicians including Mike Hayes (the
Pricklefarmer)\, Donal Baylor\, Dave O’Neill\, Bruce Packard\, John Butle
r (the Canadian one)\, Kevin Abbey\, Lainey Kier and Steve McDonald\, John
van Buuren\, Rick Hay\, and appeared on Eric Bogle’s CD\, Endangered Spec
ies. He appeared on a variety of ads and soundtracks and have been a regul
ar for many years\, with a variety of bands and performers\, at the Nation
al Folk Festival.
\n
His recent and current projects include Craig Da
wson’s extraordinary Lord Byron Five\; a double-
\n
CD work-in-progre
ss with Pat\, Geoff and Steve Drummond\; a CD commemorating Gordon Lightfo
ot’s 75th birthday with Gary Luck\; and a new blues band\, The Northside L
emon Kickers. As a member of Celtic band\, Humbug\, he recorded and produc
ed their recent CD\, On Raglan Road.

As a solo performer his mater
ial ranges from traditional to contemporary.
